How can yoga change your life by Maya Dattani
How can yoga change your life…by Maya Dattani
If the thought of going to a yoga class scares you, don’t let the poses and the bendy bodies put you off!! Yoga can really change you, not just your body but your life as well.
Yoga helps you feel calmer and less anxious, by slowing down your breath and moving your body mindfully, your body reacts differently. Your heart rate and blood pressure slows down. It allows the body to rest, and digest. It brings the body and mind into a more relaxed state of being, which means you can see things logically, helping you make better choices or decisions.
Practising yoga helps you become more aware of all your senses. Your sight, smell, taste and hearing become heightened. The more you practice being mindful in your everyday life the more you can hone in on this. I've noticed that my hearing has become sharper since practising yoga and that I can hear things that other people can’t. So, as I get older, I have less chance of becoming hard of hearing, which is always a bonus!
Yoga expands your intuition. When you stop from the everyday hustle and bustle of life and focus and meditate on the third eye (in-between the eyebrows and slightly above) you can create clarity, deeper focus, increased imagination and expansive intuition. By focusing on your third eye you are activating the body's internal clock, it makes someone feel tired, wake up, feel alert at a similar time every day. Enhancing the third eye can also improve the quality of your sleep. Who doesn’t want better sleep?
Meditation and sitting in stillness also help you to be in tune with yourself. To actually stop, sit and listen is a big step for some people, a step that most people try to avoid as it makes them feel uncomfortable.
Try it, sit with your legs crossed or in a chair. Straighten your back and pull your neck in slightly. Place your hands on your heart centre and gently close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths inhaling and exhaling through the nose, really breathing into the whole body nice and slowly. Now, take your focus to the energy of the heart. Stay with the long slow breathing and connecting to whatever it is that you are feeling today, this may feel really good or may make you feel uncomfortable or even sad and upset, and accept that this is ok, this is now. Keep breathing into that feeling and accept things as they are. Spend a few minutes here and let it wash over you. When you are finished, slowly open the eyes and bring yourself back into the room. Sometimes it’s also nice to have a journal to jot down a few of your thoughts and feelings onto paper.
Being in touch with your true self, loving and accepting who you are as you are, can really make a difference to the quality of your life and what you can bring to it. If you can truly love and accept yourself you can give so much more to the people in your life, your partner, children, work colleagues and anyone you make connections with.
Imagine what a loving confident you would feel like, to inspire and touch the lives of all the people that you meet along the way.
These are just a few of the many reasons I practice Kundalini Yoga, to live a life I truly love with a clear mind and healthy body. I hope I have given you enough encouragement to give it ago.
