Words for everyone: Lipspeaking and BSL support comes to the Main Stage

This November at the NEC Birmingham, the Mind Body Spirit Main Stage opens up to more of our community than ever before. We're delighted to announce that we've partnered with FeelHear to bring live lipspeaking with additional British Sign Language to our Main Stage programme across Saturday and Sunday.

For almost 50 years, Mind Body Spirit has been a place where people come to listen, learn and feel something shift. But if you're deaf, hard of hearing or find it difficult to follow a talk in a busy hall, some of that experience can pass you by. We want to change that, and this is where it starts.

Meet FeelHear

FeelHear was founded in 2018 by Nancy Weatherson, a registered lipspeaker who began her career working with deaf adults in supported living. Nancy loved to sing her way through her shifts, and her clients would dance along even though they couldn't hear her. So she started signing songs for them, and they told her they could feel the music through her performance. That's where the name comes from, and it's exactly the spirit we wanted on our stage.

A lipspeaker is a hearing person professionally trained to be easy to lipread, repeating what the speaker says clearly and silently. Lipspeaking with additional sign adds elements of BSL to support the meaning, ideal for anyone who prefers to lipread but also uses some sign.
